MIDDLE AISLE: KSDK (Channel 5)
Dean was at lunch nowadays at Jack Patrick's pub in downtown St. Louis having drinks having a group of guys from the station who were joshing him about leaving the single life behind.
The reporter did not let the ribbing get to him and let every person know that he was excited about his upcoming nuptials.
Meanwhile, colleague Leisa Zigman tweeted on Dean's Twitter page: "New Dean Team! congrats to ksdk's dana hendrickson & ryan dean -off to marry this weekend! perhaps new coanchors?"
what you’re watching on TV, according to the overnight Nielsen ratings this week: More and more of you are watching Channel 5 news… You liked the NBA Finals, but not the NHL Stanley Cup…. and you like NBC’s “The Voice” and “America’s Got Talent” reality shows on Channel 5…. And you’re not a big fan of Dana Delany’s “Body of Proof.”
This is just a 3-day snapshot in June, when viewing fluctuates due to vacations and reruns. But there are some interesting trends this week in what you’re watching:
11 P.M. NEWS: Twice in the past 3 days, WLWT-TV (Ch 5) has jumped out of the basement into second place at 11 p.m., drawing more viewers than WCPO-TV (Ch 9). As usual, WKRC-TV (Ch 12) is first. Ch five was second on Sunday, following NBC’s “The Voice,” and last night, following “America’s Got Talent.” Ch 9's late news really cratered last night having a 4.9 rating, thanks to a lousy lead-in from “Body of Proof” (3.4).
NBA FINALS/STANLEY CUP: The deciding game of the NBA Finals on Ch 9 won prime-time Sunday with a 10 rating, nearly doubling the ratings here for NBC’s “The Voice” (five.3) and tripling ratings for CBS’ Tony Awards (3.8). But nobody watched the NBC’s Stanley Cup on Ch 5 Monday, which draw a 1.6 rating, and sunk Ch 5's 11 p.m. news (2.0). But you came back to Ch 5's late news on Tuesday, which finished second again.
MORNING TV NEWS RACE: Although Monday didn’t end well for Ch five with the Stanley Cup, the day started strong for WLWT-TV. Ch 5's “News 5 Today” won at 6-7 a.m. having a 3.9 rating, beating usual winner Ch 12. (In May, Ch five was third behind Ch 12 and Ch 9 at 6-7 a.m.). Tuesday Ch five was second to Ch 12 in the time period…. which means Ch 9 was third both mornings.
OPRAH HAS LEFT THE BUILDING: Oprah has stopped making new shows, and you’ve stopped watching. Oprah ratings this week are down 40% (from five.9 in May to 2.4 this week). Ch 5's “Judge Judy” was second to Ch 12's news, with Oprah reruns on Ch 9 dropping to third Monday and Tuesday. Yesterday’s Oprah (2.2) was almost beaten by “Steve Wilkos” on Ch 64 (2.1)!
What’s the big deal about Oprah, because she’s already checked out? Her low ratings are killing Ch 9 news viewership at 5 p.m. Ch 9's five p.m. news Monday was a 4.6, barely beating third place Ch five (4.4). Yesterday Oprah’s 2.2 rating gave Ch 9 a lowly 3.0 at five p.m., but WCPO was second because Ch 5's news tanked having a 2.6.
More of you are keeping an eye on Ch 5, and so am I. Some of you will say this is just a June blip, or too small of a sample (398 homes with Nielsen meters), but I think it could be a sign of a change in the News 5 fortunes - aided by NBC’s stronger summer programming, Ch 5's continued heavy promotion for its morning team of Lisa Cooney & Todd Dykes, and the fact that Ch five hasn’t changed anchors in a while. Ch five was the only station in May which increased ratings (viewers) for every newscast compared to a year ago.
Are you watching more of Channel five? Or less news on other stations? What do you think?
