"Downton Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes says James Cameron took liberties he should not have in "Titanic," wrongly portraying the ship's initially officer by portraying him as a coward.

Fellowes said he will set the record straight on William Murdoch, initial officer on RMS Titanic, in his new four-part miniseries on the 1912 disaster for the U.K.'s ITV1.

Cameron's Oscar-winning 1997 blockbuster -- due to get a 3D re-release subsequent month -- portrayed Murdoch as a coward who shot passengers just before taking his own life.

Fellowes told the U.K.'s Radio Mag that in reality Murdoch, who went down using the ship when she sank just after hitting an iceberg, was credited with launching the lifeboats that saved 75% of the survivors.

Fellowes told the magazine: "That was really unfair how Murdoch was depicted. He wasn't cowardly.

"He fired the pistol to just quit a prospective riot. It was suddenly obtaining out of hand, and he fired it inside the air. That is not being cowardly."

Fellowes added: "I don't assume you may just say, 'Well, we'll make this guy a villain -- he'll do."

The "Gosford Park" writer told the magazine: "I assume with genuine people today you have a type of crucial to be true to who they were.

"I do not believe you may take a person who was moral and decent and make them do anything immoral and indecent. I'd feel uncomfortable undertaking that. So we do have Murdoch, and we've him firing a pistol...(But) there's slightly bit of setting the record straight."

In 1998, Twentieth Century Fox gave $8,000 to a fund commemorating the Titanic's initial mate after his household and neighbors objected for the movie's portrayal of him.Julian Fellowes says Cameron .everest, mariana trench, ministry of sound, cameron, earth hour 2012
