Did Osama bin Laden Win the War Just After all?
It's a pity some US Navy seal blew Osama bin Laden's brains out in that compound in Pakistan. In one sense, anyway. Since now we'll never actually know what was going through his mind when he decided to create war on modernity. We'll never ever know, either, regardless of whether he was content material using the progress, if that is the right word, of his strategy to drag us all back into the pre-medieval dark age. Presumably that was his plan. If he had 1.

Also, realistically, even if the Americans had just laid hands on him to spirit him away into years of detention and hostile debriefing just before lastly slipping a needle into his arm, we likely still wouldn't have known what he was thinking. Extremely few of the thoughts of probably the most senior Al Qaeda leaders who've been captured have ever created it into the public domain. And if they did, it is unlikely many individuals would trust in their veracity, coming as they did from men questioned under torture.

Inside the end these are the factors we have to ask and answer for ourselves. Just after the September 11 atrocities, what did we do wrong? What did we get suitable?
We've been asking these questions in 1 form or one other all more than the world considering that the planes flew into the twin towers along with the Pentagon back in 2001. We ask them just about every time one more soldier dies in Afghanistan. We ask them when the French government outlaws religious headdress. Or when other governments ban the construction of mosques. When I say ‘‘we’’ I do not mean it in a tiny minded, parochial sense. I mean we of the modern world. The globe that believed it had moved beyond religious bloodletting.

We do not talk concerning the War on Terror anymore, and that is in all probability a good factor. It was always a dumb name. But we nonetheless fight it naturally, or rather a little number of our military personnel do - and here I mean smaller in a relative sense. The US, for example, has tens of thousands of soldiers in Afghanistan, but as a society it has not mobilised to fight that war.

As a society it arguably has bigger problems these days. In that sense possibly bin Laden failed. He wanted his holy war to be by far the most crucial factor in the globe. The only factor within the world. It's been a long time considering that that was the case.

But one question worth asking is no matter whether he won in one more way. Would the economy of the West be in such a wretched state had we not collectively poured trillions of dollars into the destructive arts of war this past decade? It can be an impossible question to answer. Even if you differentiate in between a war of selection in Iraq along with a war of need to have in Afghanistan you cannot disentangle one from the other. That is not how history works.Did Osama bin Laden Win the War Just After all?
